HKUST provides various scholarships for you to join our research and taught postgraduate community, which can well cover your tuition fee, accommodation fee and other living costs.

Postgraduate Studentship (PGS)

HK$ 216,360 per year (~US$27,700/ year)

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)

It is an internationally recognized award to draw the best PhD students around the globe to Hong Kong. HKUST has recruited the largest number of HKPFS awardees among local institutions, coming from 40 countries and regions. 1 out of 7 PhD new students of HKUST received the Fellowship.

The application for 2022/23 Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme is now closed. Successful candidates will be notified by RGC via email in Apr 2022. For more details about the scheme, please click here.

Stipend: HK$ 322,800 per year for 4 years* (~US$41,400)

HKUST RedBird PhD Award:
Recruitment Award of HK$40,000(~US$5,100) in the first year
+ Academic Excellence Award of HK$20,000 (~US$2,550) per year, in the following years*

Conference Travel Allowance:
HK$13,500 per year for 4 years (~US$1,730)

* subject to continual meeting of renewal conditions and compliance to RGC's regulations

RedBird PhD Award Program

It is an award for excellent PhD candidates, in recognition of their outstanding academic performance and research capacity.

Recruitment Award for new PhD students:
HK$40,000 (~US$5,100) and a waiver of tuition fee* in the first year

Academic Excellence Award for current PhD students:
HK$20,000 (~US$2,550) per year, in the following years

The award is renewable in subsequent years, subject to continual excellent performance.

* Local PhD students will receive a tuition waiver from the Hong Kong SAR Government instead.

Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program (AFLSP)

It is a scholarship for new non-local students from East, Southeast and South Asia to pursue master's studies and cross-cultural enrichment.

What it offers:

  • Scholarships covering tuition, lodging and daily subsistence costs throughout the normative study period

The University is now inviting applications for 2022/23 admissions.

Targeted Taught Postgraduate Programmes Fellowships Scheme

The Fellowships Scheme is set up by the University Grants Committee to award meritorious local students to pursue further studies in priority areas conducive to the development of Hong Kong.

Eligible students will receive subsidy in the tuition fee payment.

Tuition Waiver up to HK$120,000

Tuition Waiver Scheme for Local MPhil and PhD Students

To build up a pool of local research talents to sustain Hong Kong’s competitiveness and propel the development of our higher education, the Hong Kong Government has introduced this new scheme. 

Tuition Waiver up to HK$42,100p.a.

  • Applicable to all local students enrolled in full-time UGC-funded MPhil/PhD programs, who have the (i) right of abode, (ii) right to land or (iii) “unconditional stay” status in Hong Kong. Check for the symbol “A”, “R” or “U” in the HKSAR Smart ID.
  • Provided for normative period of study
    • MPhil: 2 years
    • PhD (with a research master’s degree): 3 years
    • PhD (without a research master’s degree): 4 years

Other Funding and Scholarships

Outreach Research Award & Greater Bay Area Research Award 

The Overseas Research Award and Greater Bay Area Research Award for current PhD students aim to enrich students’ research experience by providing them with exposure to a foreign culture and environment, and widening their circle of professional contacts, so as to better prepare students for their future careers.

HK$10,000/month (~US$1,275) for an overseas attachment

HK$5,000/month (~US$640) for a Greater Bay Area attachment
