Alex's start-up, 3DK Tech limited, was established as a result of his PhD research at HKUST, with the resources that he said would have been very difficult to access back home in Romania. While in the University, he and his team developed a novel way of metal 3D printing - the proprietary Ultrasonic metal 3D printing technology, which adds a great deal of efficiency and reliability to Selective Laser Melting (SLM), the leading metal 3D printing process in the market.
The company is now the recipient of the Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) fund. "HKUST has been helpful in providing a platform for young scientists like myself to follow their goals, both in terms of facilities and financial support. These opportunities have been instrumental in helping a young start-up such as ours develop in its most critical stage."
Looking ahead, Alex's long term plan is to hopefully dominate the market of Metal 3D Printing Machine sales, and become a major player in the machine sales industry.
